Korea’s second city plans spectacular celebration around the power of information and communication technology
Geneva, 21 October 2013 – ITU and the Government of the Republic of Korea have signed the host country agreement for the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2014 (PP-14), which will take place in the port city of Busan from Monday, 20 October to Friday, 7 November 2014.
The Plenipotentiary Conference is the top policy-making body of ITU, the UN agency for ICTs which oversees global radio spectrum allocation, the creation of global technical standards for ICT networks and services, and efforts to promote digital inclusion in under-served communities.
Held every four years, the conference:
sets ITU’s general policies;
adopts four-year strategic and financial plans;
elects the senior management team of the organization, the members of its governing Council, and the members of the Radio Regulations Board; and
Addresses key issues related to ICTs as requested by its Members.
The agreement was signed in Seoul today by ITU Secretary-General Dr Hamadoun I. Touré, and Korea’s Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Choi Mun-Kee.
Speaking at the signing ceremony at the Conrad Seoul hotel, Dr Touré congratulated the host country on its commitment to arriving at a mutually-agreed contract that will pave the way to the next major milestone in ITU’s 148-year history.
“This agreement is a major landmark on the road to PP-14,”said Dr Touré. “A sound and solid host country agreement is indispensable to a successful conference, and I am very pleased to see that, here in Korea, the internal preparatory process is also moving forward with confidence.”
Minister Choi said that “through its hosting of ITU’s PP-14, Korea will showcase its status as an ICT powerhouse to the international community.”
PP-14 will take place at Bexco, Busan’s state-of-the-art exhibition and convention centre. The Korean government is planning a number of side-events to complement the conference. Details can be found on the host country website: www.itupp2014.org/en_main/?en_popup=1
